What is probably happening here is that every ship in this game equipped with shields generates a shield bubble. Knowing that, I had never previously invested any time bothering to research any of those type weapons (or bother building ships with them whenever I picked 'em up from Assimilation). I've been skeptical of all the 'disable' type weapons up til now, just on the basis that it seemed they wouldn't do squat diddly vs. no idea if it works on the Big Moo or not. It also works on the Masters' Invasion Ships. Maybe not all the time, but I don't think I've had to make more than 2 passes on any ship with shields still up w/o managing to have it achieve the same effect on them as well. Much as you can still see certain early game weapons still find a way to pierce through shields and still hit ships, so does this one. One other thing - the weapon states that it can't be used on shielded ships, but. Then, of course, you start eradicating that front line with MDs or missiles or whatever ) You pretty much have to try it to get the real gist of just how quickly having just ONE of these ships with just ONE of these weapons on it can shut down an entire front line. They don't shoot anymore, they don't maneuver their damaged hull sections out of your field of fire anymore, etc. What the weapon DOES do, and with sickening effect, is gleefully plug every ship it sees with this EPC, rendering them completely useless for a considerable amount of battle time. Just start at the top of one side of the enemy line, come in a somewhat vertical angle, and blaze your way down the front line, b/c.

To be clear, the weapon doesn't ACTUALLY do the killing here, but all you need is one, possibly two speedy frigates with just one of these guns mounted on them - maybe if you want to splurge, you can fit some anti-missile or armor or a class 1 shield on 'em to help keep them around (though having a really fast frigate's basically the main point here). Yeah, early on, it's a rather big energy drain when all you've got is nuclear or fusion power to go with.īut holy does it the enemy up like no tomorrow ! Well, as much as I love my Mass Drivers, I've gotta go out on the limb and say that the Enveloping Pulse Cannon, that tech you pick off the Ionic Storm Crushas, has gotta be the NASTIEST weapon out there, short of the Death Ray.
